Celebrity hair stylist comes to heal hair

Celebrity hair stylist Frédéric Fekkai, famous for shaping coiffures of everyone from Heidi Klum to Bill Clinton, made a whirlwind tour of four Atlanta stores recently, to conduct consultations with a select few locals, sign a hairbrush or two and energize the retail troops in this lagging economy. For more than 20 years, Fekkai has shaped the canvas of his clients' hair into unique portraits of style. Born in Aix-en-Provence, France, he quickly gained a reputation for his clean modern haircuts upon his arrival in New York. He went on to create his line of Fekkai products which are made available to the public only after undergoing rigorous testing in eight namesake salons that are spread across five states, including Florida and Texas.

Great hair is hair that is in good condition and well styled, said Fekkai, who created a hair care line toaddress various hair concerns such as aging and fading color. A simple regimen of shampoo, conditioner and treatment, volumizing and glossing is all it should take to maintain hair. Most clients make the mistake of using too much product, Fekkai said.

Fekkai shows Kate Seo how to maximize the beauty of her hair. He says women should not overdo it on hair care products, even his own. "The biggest challenge is really that people are too insecure and confused about their look. It is a challenge to really give them a great sense of confidence that they can look beautiful," Fekkai told AJC reporter Nedra Rhone.

For the holidays, Fekkai suggests trying something different. "It's important to play with your hair and be festive," he said. Use an elastic band to create a simple updo but make it special by adding a spritz of his Spray On Hair Crystals, which come in champagne, copper and bronze, $18.50.

Though his products are now ubiquitously displayed in stores including Ulta and Bath & Body Works, getting face ... er, head, time with the stylist is no easy feat, which is why more than a half-dozen women and several men braved an early December downpour to seek the master's input.

Over the years, in his consultations with innumerable clients, he often hears the same concerns. What women want is volume, said Fekkai, but they are also concerned about finding the right style and the best hair color. As most stylists would agree, Fekkai believes a good hairstyle begins with a good haircut, one that makes your face look more narrow or more round or more of whatever shape you need it to be in order to achieve a flattering look.
