Atlanta-based cell phone company, Cricket Wireless, gave gifts to families in need across the nation

Staying warm and dry until the weekend.

Earlier this month, the Atlanta-based cell phone company, Cricket Wireless, called for nominations of families in need during the holiday season.

In time for Christmas, Cricket gifted 144 families nationwide a $1,000 Visa gift card and additional gifts, including a dozen families in metro Atlanta.

The gifts were part of a promotional event by the company called, “12 Days of Cricket,” which also came with a new smartphone and one-year of free service.

"We hope we can alleviate some of that stress so families can focus on what matters most — spending time together," Cricked Wireless President John Dwyer said in a press release.

The company said it received nearly 1,000 nominations of deserving families, but ultimately chose 12 recipients in 12 cities. That includes the dozen families who were surprised with gifts at the Cricket Wireless headquarters in Buckhead in time for the holidays.

In addition to the phone plan and money, the families were given a holiday meal to take home.

"It has been humbling to celebrate just a few of the many hardworking families our employees come into contact with each and every day," Tiffany Baehman, chief marketing officer and vice president of Cricket Wireless, told Patch.

Gifts were also given out in Boston, Baltimore, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Miami, New York, Sacramento and Phoenix, according to the company.
