Award-winning gospel performer Deitrick Haddon is in a good place these days.
He’s just welcomed his third child. The reality TV “Preachers” franchise is expanding to Atlanta. And, on Friday, he will release his eighth solo album, “Masterpiece.”
“The inspiration for this project really came from where I am in my life right now,” said the three-time Grammy-nominated Haddon. “I’m happy. I’m at peace. I’m settled. I’m balanced. I have a great wife and three children. It’s a masterpiece, but the journey to get here was rough. Now, I know that everything happens for a reason and that all things work for the good of those who love the Lord.”
Dove Award winner, Haddon will be in town at 6 p.m. Friday at the DTLR store in the Camp Creek Marketplace, 3614 Marketplace Blvd. in East Point, where he will sign copies of his new album and perform.
“Masterpiece” was recorded in Los Angeles and contains 16 tracks of which Haddon either wrote all or part.
The album, incorporates a bit of R&B, hip-hop and a dash of reggae, and takes off with the the lead single, “Restore Me Again. “
Other offerings include, the title track, “Masterpiece” and others such as “Perfect Storm” and “Running.”
In "Under Control," Haddon unleashes about the violence and restlessness taking place across the nation - in places like Charleston, where nine members of a black church were gunned down during Bible study.
"Oh, I was thinking about everything," said Haddon. "I was thinking about being black in America. I was thinking about police brutality…about the Sandra Bland situation. I was thinking about so many things that have taken place in our culture and our generation. In the end, though, I have to believe that God has it all under control. There is no other way to think or else people will lose faith."
This album was all Haddon, who said he had a lot to get out of his system.
“This is my masterpiece, there was no room for anybody else.” On his next album, Haddon said he may invite some friends to come out and play around musically. “This was on purpose. This is my baby.”
The Detroit native has been through the fire, including going through a messy, public divorce.
"I gave up about 10 times," said Haddon, who now lives in Los Angeles and appears on "Preachers of L.A." "But that comes with life. The good thing is seasons change…If you make it through the winter season, spring is going to come."
If you think Haddon has been busy the last year or so, wait until 2016.
Haddon will go on tour to support his new album and work on a documentary about gospel music. He said details of the documentary are still being tweaked. He’s also working on other television project.
Pastor, producer, singer and actor.
Haddon loves them all.
“I give God the praise ,” he said. “I’m doing everything I love.”
