Reading is fundamental.

Apparently, it may also be a good fundraiser.

Charis Circle will hold its first read-a-thon fundraiser during which participants read whatever they want for a 24-hour period. They can win prizes and help Charis in the process.

So far, the nonprofit has raised about $1,200 of its $10,000 goal.

“What we want to do is get people excited about reading,” said Elizabeth Anderson, executive director of Charis Circle.

She said participants can read a book, a magazine or listen to an audiobook. It can be a solo project or one for the whole family to enjoy.

For her part, Anderson plans to read most- if not all- of that 24-hour period. If she can’t physically hold a book, say if she’s walking the dog, she plans to listen to an audiobook.

Her goal is 1,000 pages. “I’m might take a catnap but I plan is to read for the whole 24 hours,” she said.

Charis Circle is the sister nonprofit of Charis Books & More and its programming arm. Charis Books & More is an independent feminist bookstore located at 1189 Euclid Ave. N.E.

You can donate to help a team or join one and register to be a reader.

Where is this happening? Anywhere you want: the bathtub, bed, listening to an audio book in your car or at work (on your break, of course.)

The read-a-thon begins at midnight on Nov. 29 and participants must take a count of all their reading for the next 24 hours.

The whole weekend may be good for readers and booksellers alike. Various authors will be on hand at Charis from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 28 to sign books as well as make suggestions on what to read.

That event is part of as part of the Indies First, a national campaign of activities and events in support of independent bookstores.
