Two metro Atlanta Walmart locations have temporarily closed for deep cleaning and sanitizing due to the rapid surge of the omicron variant across the state.

The stores are located in Duluth at 2635 Pleasant Hill Road, and in Newnan at 1025 Highway 24 E.

The stores closed at 2 p.m. on Thursday as part of a company-initiated program to allow third-party cleaning crews time to thoroughly clean and sanitize the buildings, according to a statement from Walmart. These locations will remain closed until 6 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 8.

“As an essential business and a member of the Duluth and Newnan communities, we understand the role we play in providing our customers with food, medicine and other essential items, especially at this time,” the retail giant said in a statement.

“Everything we’re doing is for the well-being of our associates and the thousands of customers we serve daily, and in consideration of guidance by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and health experts. Given the rise in positive cases, we will follow CDC guidance, which includes fully vaccinated people wearing masks in public indoor settings in counties with substantial or high transmission.”

The Newnan store stated in a Facebook post that the pharmacy will remain open with alternative pickup options.
