Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated “Barbie” movie, slated to come out next summer, has released the first pictures of Ryan Gosling as Ken, Barbie’s longtime beau.
Gosling will be starring opposite Margot Robbie, who will be playing the titular character. The movie’s cast also reportedly features America Fererra, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Michael Cera and Will Ferrell, among many other big names. The film has been in development for more than a decade, with Gerwig only signing on in 2019 after writing the screenplay with her partner and fellow director, Noah Baumbach. “Barbie” will be the first live-action movie starring the iconic character.
In April of this year, Warner Bros. released the first photos of Robbie as Barbie, in her signature pink convertible. Robbie has spoken about how “unexpected” certain elements of the film will be.
“People immediately have an idea of, ‘Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,’ but our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different,’” Robbie said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
There is also a lot of excitement for Gerwig’s first film since 2019′s “Little Women”, which garnered six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. Gerwig was previously nominated for the Best Director prize for her 2017 film, “Lady Bird”.
The film is set to be released in July, 2023.
