Two best friends wanted to created a place that was beautiful, accepting and unapologetic when it came to black hair — thus the Black Hair Experience was created — an interactive selfie museum with 15+ installations and it’s a hot ticket in Atlanta.

“We’re bringing those nostalgic moments we all share when it comes to getting our hair right’ to life with Instagram-worthy spaces.” said Alisha Brooks and Elizabeth Austin-Davis to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The Atlanta location was the first exhibit that opened in 2020 right in the thick of the pandemic. Since the then, they made their way to the DMV metro area, Dallas, Los Angeles and now Austin.

Located at 1540 Avenue Place, Suite C-180 in the Druid Hills area of Atlanta, the space is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. You can get your tickets for the experience on their website. With pop-ups coming throughout Texas and possibly more at a later date TBHE is hiring at all locations.

In a survey, over 80% of black women reported having experienced workplace discrimination and admitted to changing their hair to more Eurocentric styles for work.

In 2019, the CROWN Act — which prohibits race-based hair discrimination — was passed in the U.S. House of Representatives. While the act stalled in the Senate, similar legislation has passed in several states, including New York, Virginia and Colorado.

“We are celebrating black hair culture across numerous installations. This is a culturally inclusive experience that provokes real-time connections through the universal symbol of hair.” said Austin-Davis.
