Last week, BabyCenter released its most popular baby names for 2021, and for the first time, the site did not combine spelling variations of the same name in the rankings.
The popular parenting resource said on its website that their rankings are compiled from “hundreds of thousands of parents” who share their babies’ names with the company in real-time, “making them a more up-to-the-minute look at what’s trending.”
A very big surprise for girl names — Sophia was unseated by Olivia as the most popular girl name after 11 consecutive years in the number one spot. Surely breakout pop star Olivia Rodrigo and her #1 hit “Drivers License” had something to do with that.
Meanwhile, for the third year in a row, Liam was the most popular boy name.
Some of the biggest baby name trends this year were gender-neutral and unisex names (Finley, Tatum), as well as names inspired by nature (Willow, Ivy, Sage) and pop culture (Daphne, Chadwick).
