Autumn in Atlanta is a time of celebration.

It's a chance to gather with family and friends to share the last warm days until spring, to put on aprons and jerseys for kickoffs and cookoffs, to make room in the closet for the sweaters returning to regular rotation, and to carve the pumpkins and turkeys that bookend the season.

For many, autumn is a time to enjoy the great outdoors, exploring all that Atlanta has to offer.

Endless beauty can be found along the banks of our city's most protected natural environment. The best autumn views are perhaps those to the north, as the 'Hooch traverses down from the Blue Ridge Mountains and through the hilly northern suburbs. Wondering where to put your canoe? Visit the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area website.

North of the city: Dahlonega, Blue Ridge, Rabun County

Take a short trip up I-85 toward North Carolina, on I-575 into Appalachia or northbound on Ga. 400 to experience countless sights of autumn. Outside Dahlonega, the waterfalls are among the largest in the nation, while the Blue Ridge Mountains are an endless forest grown across the peaks of massive cliffs. At Lake Burton and Lake Seed, winding rural roads weave themselves down from the high-set mountain homes to the rustic waterfront estates that dot the shores.
