SCAD Atlanta's Open Studio Night is a sneak peak at the city's artistic future.
“It’s a great way to see what young minds are thinking,” says SCAD Associate Dean Kent Knowles. The art show features more than 500 pieces from SCAD students, alumni and faculty. Pieces were chosen for display from a competitive online application pool; Illustration, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture are among the mediums represented. An entire section is dedicated to miniature art. Everything on the tiny art wall is smaller than 10 inches and costs $125.
“It’s a great way to start your collection if you don’t have one,” says Knowles. Pieces from the rest of the show range in price from $50 to more than $10,000.
For students, the 12th annual open studio night is a crash course in how the professional art world operates. Students were judged opposite SCAD faculty and other professional artists during the submission process. SCAD Atlanta invites art curators, museum directors and other members of the art industry to the event in addition to the general public; students self-price their pieces and many will be onsite to discuss their work.
“[Students] get a firm and fast understanding of what it means to present yourself and your work professionally,” says Knowles. “They get a sense of their market value. Its an education in how to brand themselves.
SCAD Atlanta expects 2,000 attendees at this year's event. The art show also has live music and art demonstrations, including an area showcasing virtual reality technology that allows artists to paint in three dimensions. Unpurchased art from the exhibition will be available online after the show at scadartsales.com.
“The art is affordable, engaging, and on different topics,” says Knowles. “I love sharing with the public what SCAD has to offer Atlanta.”
