The Georgia Institute on Aging will present the Positive Aging Icon Award Nov. 8 to Dr. Barbara L. King for her service to others and as a vibrant example of how individuals can continue to grow, learn and contribute throughout their lives and at any age.

The Institute on Aging said King's life journey embodies the philosophy and essence of positive aging -- living life to its fullest at every age:

  • At age 81, her footsteps were added to the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site.
  • At age 82, she completed and received her doctorate of ministry from the Ecumenical Theological Seminary of Detroit.
  • Today, at age 85, King continues her ministry worldwide and leads the Hillside International Truth Center, a nondenominational spiritual ministry she founded over 40 years ago in Atlanta.

This year's event will also celebrate 21 elders in Georgia who exhibit the power of positive aging in their daily lives, including centurion Ruth Butler who actively attends the New Horizons Senior Center in Atlanta and children's arts advocate Linden Longino of Lenbrook in Buckhead.

Attendees will be invited to engage in roundtable discussions with these honorees following a question and answer session with King, facilitated by Walter Coffey, president of LeadingAge Georgia. The event is open to the public. Register here. For more information, contact Jacquelyn Thornton of LeadingAge Georgia at 404-889-8536 or jthornton@leadingagega.org.
