JOHNS CREEK

Barnival at the beach

Barnwell Elementary School is holding its annual Barnival fundraiser. This year, the theme is “At the Beach,” and the event will raise money to upgrade the school’s media center. You can buy $1 tickets for access to rides and games, including the Tasmanian Twister and Turbo Tubs. Pit your brainpower against the school’s leaders by playing “Are You Smarter Than a Barnwell Teacher?” Along with the brainy challenge, look for live music, a cake walk, a silent auction, a raffle and plenty of food.

5-9 p.m. May 1. Free admission; tickets for rides and games are $1. Barnwell Elementary School, 9425 Barnwell Road, Johns Creek. 770-552-4960, barnwellpta.org.

Fridays N Duluth

Now that the warmer weather is drawing folks outdoors, this Gwinnett County city wants everyone to head downtown to be part of the Fridays N Duluth celebration. Throughout the summer and fall, the weekend kicks off with a variety of food trucks serving up different cuisines. This week, the flick is “Divergent,” a box office hit starring Shailene Woodley as Beatrice Prior, who lives in dystopian post-apocalyptic future. The film begins at dusk, but the entertainment starts earlier with live music from the Highbeams.
