NEWNAN

Fido Fest

Calling all canines and their two-legged friends! The inaugural Fido Fest is happening in Newnan, and it’s for those looking to combine their love of animals and being active. Spend the day with your doggie participating together in the 1-mile run or the 5k – or both. Awards will be given out for the races. Make sure your pup is vaccinated, leashed, non-aggressive and in good enough physical condition to be a part of the challenge. Save time to check out the pet adoption area and the family-friendly entertainment. All proceeds support the Newnan-Coweta Humane Society.

KENNESAW

Museum day

All aboard for a free day at Kennesaw’s Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History! As a member of Smithsonian Affiliations, the museum is offering free admission for a day, and they’re making sure guests can pack a lot into one visit. In addition to exploring ongoing exhibits featuring the history of the railroad industry in the South, including The General Locomotive, guests can dive into hands-on activities such as scavenger hunts and family challenges. Many of the games are centered around a Minecraft theme, so kids can build something for themselves – how about a piston-powered machine? To access the free entry, go to smithsonianmag.com for tickets.

9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 23. Free. The Southern Museum, 2829 Cherokee St., Kennesaw. 770-427-2117, southernmuseum.org
