KENNESAW
Sixth annual hummingbird banding
You may have heard of a horse or dog whisperer, but what about a hummingbird whisperer? Julia Elliot of Bird Watcher Supply Co. is one, and she’ll be showing off her skills at Kennesaw’s Smith-Gilbert Gardens this weekend. Each year, the park’s hummingbirds are tagged to study their health and migration patterns with a process called “banding.” Because the birds are so small and the process is incredibly precise, only 150 people in the United States are licensed to do the banding, and Elliot is one. While you watch her work, the kids can check out the hummingbird craft area and play Frisbee, ring toss or cornhole. The event is rain or shine.
8-11 a.m. Sept. 10. $8-$10; younger than 5 are free. Smith-Gilbert Gardens, 2382 Pine Mountain Road, Kennesaw. 770-919-0248, smithgilbertgardens.com.
