SeattleInsider: 43 reasons why 1994 produced the best '90s albums

Beastie Boys – “Ill Communication:” This album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200, catapulting the Beastie Boys’ back to the top of the charts. The album featured hits “Sabatoge,” “Get It Together” and “Sure Shot.”

Green Day – “Dookie:” This major label debut sold over 10 million copies in the U.S. and catapulted Green Day into the international spotlight.

Weezer – “Blue Album:” Weezer’s “Blue Album” debuted in 1994 and became a triple-platinum success. This album was accompanied by hit music videos, “Buddy Holly,” “Undone – The Sweater Song” and “Say It Aint So.”

Dave Matthews Band – “Under the Table and Dreaming:” In September of 1994, DMB released their second album, “Under the Table and Dreaming” that featured hit songs “What Would You Say?” “Satellite” and “Ants Marching.”

Soundgarden – “Superunknown:” This Seattle band rode this album to No. 336 on Rolling Stones 500 all-time greatest albums list, hit platinum five times and received a Grammy nomination.

Blues Traveler – “Four:” This rock band from New Jersey gained wide acclaim with the release of “Four,” an album featuring hit songs, “Run-Around” and “Hook.”

Pearl Jam – “Vitology:” This third studio album by one of the greatest bands in Seattle history went platinum five times and was chosen by Rolling Stone as a top 500 album of all-time.

Bush – “Sixteen Stone:” This debut album hit platinum six times, selling over 10 million records in the U.S. The band is from London and started their run in 1992.

Alice in Chains – “Jar of Flies:” This album was also released in 1994 and is still one of this Seattle bands best sellers.

Hootie and the Blowfish – “Cracked Rear View” This mainstream debut album went platinum 16 times in the U.S. and eventually became the best-selling album of 1995.

Beck – “Mellow Gold:” This album included Beck’s breakthrough single, “Loser.”

The Notorious B.I.G – “Ready to Die:” This debut album for The Notorious B.I.G. was released in September of 1994 and went double platinum in 1995.

Ben Harper – “Welcome to the Cruel World:” For many Ben Harper fanatics this was an album that put him on the map. It featured “Forever,” “Walk Away,” and “Waiting on an Angel.”

Nirvana – “MTV Unplugged in New York:” While 1994 grabbed the attention of music fanatics with the passing of Kurt Cobain, this year also brought the release of a live album by Nirvana. Many believe this is still the best Unplugged performance of all-time.

Blink-182 – “Cheshire Cat:” Was this the beginning of Blink-182’s great run later in the ‘90s? Some say “Cheshire Cat” was a breakthrough album for the band from southern California.

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony – “Creepin on ah Come Up:” Yeah, this album was a hit. And yes, it was released in 1994.

Cake – “Motorcade of Generosity:” This band from Sacramento was formed in 1991 and released “Motorcade of Generosity” in 1994.

Coolio – “It Takes a Thief:” This album’s lead single “Fantastic Voyage” peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. This was Coolio’s debut solo album.

Korn – “Korn:” They became a band in 1993 and only a year later released their self-titled debut album a year later.

Live – “Throwing Copper:” Yes, this album was also released in 1994 and has sold more than eight million copies in the U.S.

Nas “Illamatic:” Nas’ debut album from 1994 is often ranked as one of the greatest hip hop albums of all-time.

Nine Inch Nails – “The Downward Spiral:” This second studio album entered the Billboard 200 at No. 2 and has sold over four million copies in the U.S.

Oasis – “Definitely Maybe:” This album is one of the best in the ‘90s. Not maybe, definitely.

Outkast – “Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik:” Outkast, still hot in 2014, released their debut album in 1994 and peaked at No. 20 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
