Ticket sales are strong for the Savannah Music Festival, whose 18 days of performances feature every genre from an Atlanta Symphony Orchestra premier to the alt-folkies band Old Crow Medicine Show.
The festival attracts a large share of its audience from metro Atlanta.
“We are close [to sold out] for Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell and Richard Thompson,” festival spokesman Ryan McMaken said.
The well-known country, folk and rock musicians will play together in a 2,600-seat venue, and there are only about 200 tickets left, he said.
McMaken said notices will be posted on the festival website as shows sell out.
The festival is widely praised for its diversity, mixing musical performances from around the world with an already eclectic blend of classical and traditional American styles such as jazz and bluegrass. It was created by Rob Gibson, who previously launched Jazz at Lincoln Center and later ran the Atlanta Jazz Festival.
A highlight this year will be the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s performance of a piano concerto by jazz superstar Marcus Roberts. Roberts is also an associate director of the festival, which co-commissioned the piece.
For many perforrmances, it is possible to show up and grab seats. Check the website for ticket availability. A safer bet, especially for marquee events, is to order tickets in advance. If planning to stay in Savannah overnight you should reserve hotel rooms in advance.
