Singer-songwriter-pianist Tori Amos and her American Doll Posse tour rolled into the nearly sold-out Fox Theatre Wednesday night, with Yaov opening.

Tori Amos was born Myra Ellen Amos on Aug. 22, 1963, in Newton, N.C. Her father, a pastor, moved the family to Baltimore when Tori was 2 years old.

Tori Amos began to play the piano as a 2-year-old, and began composing instrumental pieces on piano by age 5. At 9 she started to add lyrics to her pieces.

Tori Amos performs 'Body & Soul' Wednesday night at the Fox. She is married to British sound engineer Mark Hawley, and they have one daughter, Natashya 'Tash' Lorien Hawley, born on Sept. 5, 2000.

The eccentric artist is known for emotionally intense songs that cover a range of subjects including sexuality, religion and personal tragedy. In 2003, she was voted by Rolling Stone magazine as the fifth-best live act in rock 'n' roll.

Tori Amos has worldwide record sales of more than 12 million units and has been nominated for nine Grammy awards.

As a child, Tori Amos won a full scholarship to the Peabody Conservatory of Music. She left at age 11. 'I was supposed to be a concert pianist,' she told the Baltimore Sun, 'but I was more interested in what Stevie Wonder was doing.'

As a high school senior, Tori Amos co-wrote 'Baltimore' with her brother Mike for a competition involving the major league Baltimore Orioles. The song won the contest and became her first single.

The nearly full Fox Theatre will host the Smashing Pumpkins Thursday and Friday nights.

Tori Amos co-wrote a song called 'It Might Hurt a Bit' with Michael Stipe of R.E.M. Intended for the soundtrack to the film 'Don Juan DeMarco,' the song was not used and has never been released.

Tori Amos has contributed to film soundtracks including Toys, Higher Learning, Mission: Impossible II, Great Expectations and Mona Lisa Smile. The tour heads to Orlando, Fort Meyers, Melbourne, Clearwater and West Palm Beach, Fla.; and Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio.

Cape Town, South Africa, native Yoav is a multi-instrumentalist.
