It's been 20 years since the the Pogues played in Atlanta. That ended on March 9, 2009 at The Tabernacle. James Fearnley rocked the house with his accordion playing.

Formed in the early 1980s afterglow of Britain's punk explosion, the Pogues demonstrated the surprising natural affinity of Irish folk and punk, spawning a style that still inspires young bands from Dropkick Murphys to Gogol Bordello a quarter-century later.

The Pogues have been called the founders of the Celtic punk movement.

Terry Woods also plays in "The Woods Band."

Andrew Ranken, drummer, also plays in the band "Andrew Ranken and Mysterious Wheels."

Famous songs by the Pogues include: "Thousands Are Sailing,"an ode to the post-potato-famine migration, "If I Should Fall From Grace With God'" and "Fairytale of New York," which, for some, tells Christmas like it really is.

Shane MacGowan, the original lead singer, sang the Pogues' anthem "Streams of Whiskey."

Christina and Dan Payne traveled from Edgewood, New Mexico, with Alexia, age 7, and Mario, age 11, to see the Pogues. The Pogues' tin whistle player, Spider Stacy, told Access Atlanta that it's gratifying to see kids in the audience. "It's good to know that you're doing something that's got sufficient weight to it, and heart to it, and meaning, that it can carry on from one generation to another."
