The Moody Blues lift Chastain Park

The Moody Blues opened the concert season at Chastain Park on a beautiful Saturday night in Atlanta.

The Moody Blues formed in 1964 in Birmingham, England. Currently touring are original members Justin Hayward (vocals, guitar), John Lodge (vocals, bass) and Graeme Edge (drums).

The Moody Blues have sold more than 55 million albums worldwide. Awards they have won include 18 platinum records, the NARM Number One World Group Award 1972, the Golden Ticket Award for the sale of 100,000 tickets at Madison Square Garden, plus numerous ASCAP and Performance Awards.

Drummer and songwriter Graeme Edge is a founding member of The Moody Blues.

The Moody Blues' first full studio album, Days Of Future Passed, was released on Nov. 11, 1967, and remained on the Billboard charts for over two years. It was one of rock's first concept albums.

David Justin Hayward was born on Oct. 14, 1946, in Swindon, Wiltshire, England. In 2000, he was one of a handful of British artists to receive the 'Golden Note' award for lifetime achievement by ASCAP. In 2004 he received the 'Gold Badge' lifetime achievement from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors.

Public Broadcasting of Atlanta sponsored a meet-and-greet before the concert with The Moody Blues.

Two dozen contributors to PBA received tickets and the opportunity to get autographs and photos backstage with The Moody Blues at Chastain Park Amphitheatre prior to the concert Saturday.

Justin Hayward and John Lodge perform 'Tuesday Afternoon.' In 1999, The Moody Blues appeared in one episode of 'The Simpsons' called 'Viva Ned Flanders.'

Flutist Norda Mullen plays and sings with The Moody Blues, one of the first groups to merge rock with elements of classical music.

In October, the Hard Rock Park theme park in Myrtle Beach announced that it is building a dark ride based on 'Nights in White Satin' called 'Nights in White Satin - The Trip.' The ride will incorporate sights, sounds, smells and tactile technique, as well as a re-orchestrated version of the song by Justin Hayward.

Opening night of the 2008 concert season at Chastain featured a number of classic rock fans.

The Moody Blues played two sets Saturday night, featuring most of their hits. The group travels to Greenville, Baltimore, Hershey, Morristown, Philadelphia and Providence.
