N.J.'s Stone Pony holds memorial for Clarence Clemons

The June 18, 2011 death of Clarence Clemons, the larger-than-life saxophone player who played in Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, struck a chord with New Jersey fans, who gathered for a memorial at the Stone Pony, a New Jersey bar.

Fans stand near a memorial for Clemons at Stone Pony. It opened its doors to a crowd of about 150 people, many adorned in Springsteen T-shirts.

A woman wipes tears from her face. Gary Mottola, who owns the Stone Pony, said Sunday that the E Street Band was "the soul of Asbury Park" and that Clemons was the soul of the band.

Jimmy Capo, an employee at The Stone Pony, puts a message reading "God Bless Clarence Clemons" on the rock bar's marquee. Kyle Brendle, the house promoter at the Stone Pony, said Springsteen and Clemons played routinely at the club in the 1970s -- but usually as unannounced acts.
