Peace, mud among 1969 Woodstock memories

Photos from Woodstock, arguably the greatest rock 'n' roll concert of all time.

FORTY YEARS ago this August, 400,000 people converged on the tiny upstate New York town of Bethel for the Woodstock Music and Art Festival. The event is remembered in Ang Lee's movie 'Taking Woodstock,' opening Aug. 28. (This couple, Bobbi and Nick Ercoline, are still together!)

THE CONCERT is hailed as one of the greatest moments of rock 'n' roll, and some say, officially heralded the end of the '60s.

THE ROADS leading to the music site quickly became clogged, and concert-goers abandoned their cars and started walking to the site.

ONE FESTIVAL hopeful took advantage of the standstill traffic.

FREE FOOD was brought in to feed the youngsters on the concert grounds.

FOLK SINGER Joan Baez performed while six months pregnant.

BRITISH SINGER Joe Cocker entertained the crowd on the last day of performances.

BRITISH BLUES-ROCKERS Canned Heat were among the 32 acts that performed. Their set was four songs long, including 'Woodstock Boogie.'

BETWEEN SETS, concert-goers napped on the grounds, hid from the rain, played in the mud or went in search of adventure.

MEDICAL TENTS stayed busy, with drug overdoses, heatstroke and possibly a few live births (that mystery has never been solved). These music fans were treated for cuts and bruises after falling off a car on the concert grounds.

THE 600-ACRE farm pasture in the Catskill Mountains could barely hold the concert-goers.

THOUGH WOODSTOCK attendees are regarded as a peaceful bunch, some of them did find mischief.

THESE CONCERT-GOERS waited atop their Volkswagen bus during Woodstock.

FANS COZIED up to the stage.
