India.Arie: Outspoken, vibrant artist

India Arie performs at awards show, an event that highlights African-American champions from all walks of life.

It's been suggested that the singer is still unhappy about the 2002 Grammys, when she was nominated in seven categories but famously did not win a single award.

The next year, though, Arie won two Grammys out of her four nominations. And this year, her song "Beautiful Flower" was nominated as "Best R&B song."

The singer told the AJC that she skipped this year's awards show anyway because she knew she had no reason to be there. "... And I was right," she added.

She attended Savannah College of Art and Design and started dabbling in music there. Here she's seen performing a free concert in Centennial Olympic Park in 2002.

Arie comes from a family with musical roots: Here she sings with her mother (left) at Music Midtown in 2003.

The city of Atlanta awarded her its Phoenix Award in 2003. At Riviera, she pauses before the ceremony.

Arie says Soul Vegetarian restaurant (pictured) is one of her favorites in Atlanta.

If you don't catch her there, you might find her in reruns, such as on "The Bernie Mac Show," where she played herself to Camille Winbush's (left) character Vanessa.

Or you might see her on "Sesame Street," singing with Elmo.
