Larry Graham, Jr. was born in Beaumont, Texas. He was the bass guitar player in the popular and influential psychedelic soul/funk band Sly & the Family Stone.

Sweat started his musical career as a member of a Harlem band called "Jamilah" in 1975, and with the help of Teddy Riley became one of creators of 80's New Jack Swing.

Graham was credited with the invention of the slapping technique, which radically expanded the tonal palette of the bass.
