Jamal “Gravy” Woolard, a rapper and actor who played Notorious B.I.G. in a movie, remained in the Gwinnett County jail Tuesday for allegedly assaulting his wife.
Snellville Police arrested Woolard, 38, Saturday after getting a 911 call from his 15-year-old stepson. Officers say when they arrived at the Meadow Chase Court home they found broken up property in the living room and a shaken Trina Alisha Woolard.
The 35-year-old woman told officers that her husband became irate at the way she was lecturing their daughter, after the stepson had complained about her behavior.
“Ms. Woolard stated Mr. Woolard did not hit her but that he backed her up to the wall, placing his hands at her throat and began choking her,” Officer R. Nieddu wrote in the incident report. “Ms. Woolard stated the juvenile son came back downstairs and she told him to call the police.”
Nieddu wrote that he saw two abrasions around Ms. Woolard’s neck and a large amount of property damage including broken household items strewn on the floor.
“I asked Ms. Woolard if she had scratched or marked Mr. Woolard and she stated, ‘Probably,’” Nieddu wrote.
The wife said she scratched to try and stop her 300-pound husband from choking her.
Police charged Woolard with assault, battery and cruelty to children.
The 15-year-old boy told police that isn’t the first time his stepfather had assaulted his mom and that his stepfather threatened him when he intervened.
“He was tired of his mother getting hurt,” Nieddu wrote. “He stated Mr. Woolard came toward him in a threatening manner and he was afraid Mr. Woolard was going to hurt him. He stated Ms. Woolard then got in front of Mr. Woolard to stop him from reaching the juvenile.”
Mr. Woolard stated he was “very protective of his daughter because he ‘love’s his daughter more than his wife but (he’s) working on that,’” the report said.
The celebrity website TMZ obtained a copy of the 911 call. The Gwinnett County jail website still listed Woolard as an inmate on Wednesday. TMZ reported the stepson told the 911 operator that “My stepdad, he hit my mom and he’s acting crazy.” At one point you can hear him yell at Woolard … “You’re going to jail!”
Woolard who played Biggie Smalls — AKA the Notorious B.I.G. — in the movie “Notorious” in 2009 also starred in “Daisy and Ray” in 2011 and,“Love Don’t Cost a Thing” in 2003.
His other claim to fame is for being shot near the New York Hip Hop radio station Hot 97 in 2006 and giving an interview on the Funkmaster Flex show directly afterwards.
