If you still don't know Carrie from Miranda, or Charlotte from Samantha, here's your chance to catch up on the story of these four thirtysomething characters who took cable TV to new heights with its themes of friendship, dating, sexual freedom, fashion and, yes, love.

Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) is a newspaper columnist who writes about sex and dating. As the lead character, she narrates the series, posing a question to viewers each week. Though she desperately wants to be in a committed relationship, she often finds it difficult to totally commit. She lives for fashion.

Carrie's main guy is Mr. Big (Chris Noth, above), the wealthy on-again-off-again love of her life. Between on-off moments, she enjoys somewhat developed relationships with furniture maker Aiden Shaw and fellow writer Jack Berger.

She said: 'I've spent $40,000 on shoes, and I don't have a place to live? I will literally be the old woman who lives in a shoe.'

Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) Best friend to Carrie, she's an ambitious corporate lawyer who starts out with a hard, masculine edge. She pushes men away, especially if he's a "good guy." The group, her image softens, particularly after she becomes a mother and later, wife.

Bartender Steve Brady, the father of Miranda's child ,drives her nuts with his boyish charm and immaturity. Still they remain good friends between breakups and other lovers.

She said: 'I have low self-esteem, but I express it in a healthy way ... by eating a box of Double Stuff Oreos.'

For much of the series, Samantha despised monogamy. She fell for hotel magnate Richard Wright but caught him cheating, and she returns to her old, familiar ways. Then along comes young and handsome Smith Jerrod, and that all changes.

Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall) is a daring public relations executive who's quite proud of her uninhibited sexuality. Still, she's extremely loyal to her friends. Her bout with breast cancer exposes her vulnerable side.

She said: 'I'm trisexual. I'll try anything once.'

Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) is a hopeless (and naive) romantic who works in an art gallery and longs for a fairytale life. She's mostly embarrassed to talk sex. More than anything in life, she wants marriage and kids.

She eventually marries the 'perfect' guy, the rich and handsome Trey McDougal. But she soon discovers there's more to love than appearances and that the less-than-perfect Harry Goldenblatt (above) could be the man of her dreams.

She said: 'I've been dating since I was 15. I'm exhausted. Where is he?'
