The American Film Institute chose "The Wizard of Oz," "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," "The Godfather" and others as its top films in 10 different categories.

No mystery here. "Vertigo" (1958) was No. 1 in the mystery genre.

The American Film Institute has compiled the 10 best films in 10 categories. Winners were chosen by actors, filmmakers, critics and others in Hollywood from ballots that included 50 nominees in each genre. "The Wizard of Oz" (1939) was No. 1 in the fantasy genre.

Of course a John Wayne film would be selected as the best of the western genre. "The Searchers" (1956) was the one that was chosen.

In the romance category, silence is golden, which is why "City Lights" (1931) finished on top.

"To Kill a Mockingbird" (1962) made the best case among courtroom dramas.

"The Godfather" (1972) beat out "Goodfellas" and its sequel, "The Godfather Part II," to take the top spot in the gangster category.

For science fiction, nothing could take the top spot from "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968).

"Raging Bull" (1980) knocked out the competition, finishing first among sports movies.

"Lawrence of Arabia" (1962) is the best of the best when it comes to epics.

The top animation selection was "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937).
