'DR. NO,' 1962: It begins. Sean Connery's cruel smirk, a rather silly villian, an even sillier mechanical dragon, a hot girl named Honey Ryder, and it all works better than anyone imagined.

'FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE,' 1963: No. 2 is a little more subdued by 007 movie standards, with more realistic action, great locales and less silliness. Lotta Lenya as Rosa Kleb is a (relatively) believable baddie with a stiletto in her shoe.

'GOLDFINGER,' 1964: The peak for many fans. Pussy Galore, Odd Job and his deadly bowler, Fort Knox, the Aston Martin, an over-the-top heavy, a laser beam pointed at 007's crotch, and this classic exchange: 'Do you expect me to talk?' 'No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!'

'THUNDERBALL,' 1965: They wanted Julie Christie for the Bond girl, then Raquel Welch, then Faye Dunaway. They ended up with Claudine Auger. Set in the Bahamas, with lots of underwater battles.

'YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE,' 1967: Roald Dahl wrote the screenplay, and it's the first to use very little from the Ian Fleming novel. First appearance by Blofeld, head of SPECTRE. Connery was becoming very restless playing Bond by this point.

'ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE,' 1969: After five movies, Connery quit. Producers looked at Roger Moore and Timothy Dalton but went with George Lazenby, who played Bond once. It's also the only one where Bond gets married (to Diana Rigg). It doesn't end well for her.

DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER, 1971: After quitting the role, Connery came back (a huge raise helped). So did Blofeld, now played by Charles Gray. Jill St. John was the Bond girl, but a lot of fans noticed a more whimsical tone that not everyone welcomed.

'LIVE AND LET DIE,' 1973: Connery left again, so enter Roger Moore and the nudge-nudge era of a less rugged Bond. Made during the "blaxploitation" era, its African-American stereotypes don't hold up well. But the theme song by Paul MCartney and Wings is the most popular Bond theme ever.

'THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN,' 1974: Again with Moore and a little more humor. Christopher Lee played Scaramanga, a classic baddie (and the title character) but the hunt for the Solex Agitator, which harnesses the sun, is ridiculous.

'THE SPY WHO LOVED ME,' 1977: Carly Simon's 'Nobody Does It Better' kicks it off, and it never gets better than that sublime theme song. By this point, the movie script and Fleming's novel share a title only. Barbara Bach is the Bond girl, and Richard Kiel is Jaws, a villian more memorable than real.

'MOONRAKER,' 1979: On the heels of 'Star Wars,' Bond is launched into space, and goes from setting the agenda to following it. Lois Chiles is a particularly sultry Holly Goodhead, and Jaws is back.

'FOR YOUR EYES ONLY,' 1981: Summed up Roger Ebert, 'Let's face it: When you've seen one impregnable mountaintop fortress, you've seen 'em all.'

'OCTOPUSSY' 1983: The memorable name of the jewel-smuggling title character (Maud Adams) was invented by Fleming, but the movie is original, including Bond disguising himself as a clown. Louis Jordan makes a suave villain.

'NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN,' 1983: The same year as 'Octopussy,' Connery did one last Bond in a movie outside the official studio canon. (There was a long, complex legal wrangle over some story rights.) The title was a joke on Connery's vow never to play 007 again. He also drives a Bentley, as in the books.

'A VIEW TO A KILL,' 1985: Roger Moore's last bow. Christopher Walken is Max Zorin, a great bad guy (David Bowie was originally supposed to do it), Tanya Roberts is the Bond girl, and Duran Duran did the song.

'THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS,' 1987: New 007! It's Timothy Dalton, a classically trained actor who dials down Moore's raised-eyebrow camp. Still tends toward long chases, big explosions, not much character development.

'LICENSE TO KILL,' 1989: Bond resigns from MI6 and M revokes his license to kill. He heads to the Republic of Isthmus (seriously) to battle a drug lord, Sanchez. Look for unknown Benecio del Toro as a Sanchez henchman.

'GOLDENEYE,' 1995: GoldenEye was the name of Fleming's estate in Jamaica but was never an 007 book. Pierce Brosnan, whom many thought was born to play Bond, takes over from Dalton, and the box office goes up. The first 007 movie with a BMW product placement tie-in, which did well for BMW but bugged purists.

'TOMORROW NEVER DIES,' 1997: Maybe the worst Bond movie title. Brosnan continues to get high marks for his innate coolness. A slick media mogul is the villain, and Teri Hatcher (pre-'Housewives') is the rather chilly Bond girl. 'TND' opened the same day as 'Titanic.'

'THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH,' 1999: Perhaps best known for casting Denise Richards as a nuclear physicist named Christmas Jones, which was over the line even for 007 flicks. Judi Dench takes over as M, with line readings that could etch glass. Desmond Llewelyn gives his last performace as Q (for 'quartermaster'), Bond's gadget supplier; he died shortly after release.

'DIE ANOTHER DAY,' 2002: The last Brosnan film was panned for being one of the worst, summed up by Bond driving around in an invisible car. On the other hand, Halle Berry played Jinx, the Bond girl who re-created Ursula Andress' famous walk out of the ocean. John Cleese is the new Q.

'CASINO ROYALE,' 2006: An amazing reboot. There are doubts that Daniel Craig will make a good Bond -- too rough, too blond. But the movie draws heavily on Fleming's novel and inserts exciting new action sequences. (That brutal torture scene is from the book.) Nice touch: Saving 'Bond. James Bond,' until the very last line.

'QUANTUM OF SOLACE,' 2008: Craig returns, and the new movie starts exactly where 'Royale' stopped, with Bond seeking revenge for the death of his lover, Vesper Lynd. The weird title was a Fleming short story. Olga Kurylenko and Gemma Aterton are the Bond girls.
