Miss California loses crown

Miss USA pageant owner Donald Trump announced at a New York news conference that he will let Miss California USA Carrie Prejean keep her crown. She had stirred controversy over semi-nude photographs taken of her as a teenager and her association with a conservative advocacy group for marriage.

It's official: Controversial Miss California Carrie Prejean has heard the words "you're fired" from pageant boss Donald Trump. Trump issued a statement Wednesday saying he sacked Prejean for failing to honor her commitments as Miss California USA. Here they are last month when Trump first stood behind her.

Prejean created controversy during the Miss USA competition, where she was first runner-up, when she answered a judge's question about gay marriage by saying marriage should be reserved for men and women.

Donald Trump looks on as Carrie Prejean speaks to a throng of reporters. Trump defended the answer Prejean gave at the pageant when celebrity blogger Perez, one of the judges, asked her about same-sex marriage. "It's the same answer the president of the United States gave," Trump said.

Making it official, Donald Trump places a sash on Miss California USA, Carrie Prejean. In 2006, Trump gave former Miss USA Tara Conner a second chance once she agreed to enter rehab when reports surfaced that she drank alcohol at New York clubs when she was 20.
