The honor of your presence is requested at the upcoming marriage of Mittie and Thee.
Errrm…Who?
Mittie Bulloch and Thee Roosevelt were the parents of Theodore Roosevelt, our country's 26th president, a totally larger-than-life character in his own right. They also were the paternal grandparents of the equally remarkable Eleanor Roosevelt. Mittie grew up in Bulloch Hall, the fabulous circa-1839 white-pillared mansion in Roswell that's been lovingly preserved and is now a living museum of sorts. Thee was the Yankee scion of a wealthy New York family who met Mittie in Philadelphia and fell for her, hard. A year's worth of letters the courtin' couple exchanged were recently collected in a book, "Mittie & Thee, An 1853 Romance," that you can buy at the Bulloch Hall gift shop.
Even better, you can attend their wedding! Mittie and Thee were married in Bulloch Hall's dining room on Dec. 22, 1853, a seminal event that will be celebrated next month with a historic reenactment of the exchange of vows. On Dec. 21, the dramatization will take place five times, at 6:30 p.m., 7 p.m., 7:30 p.m. 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. in "the very rooms of the home occupied by the residents 162 years ago," Bulloch Hall says. It's all part of the ongoing, Antebellum-themed holiday celebration at the breathtakingly-decorated house, which includes a series of High Teas on Dec. 8, 10, 15 and 17.
But back to the nuptials. The happy couple don't appear to be registered anywhere, so you can call off the search for a circa-1853 waffle iron. But you do need to make a bit of an effort. As with all big-name weddings, everyone wants onto the guest list for this one, so you'll need to make a reservation to attend. The cost: $15 for adults and $10 for children.
