Ice Jam
January might bring colder weather, but it also brings a lineup of activities that only happen in the winter. Ice skating at the Rink@Sugar Hill is one of them. Open through Feb. 22, this outdoor arena claims to be one of the largest rinks in the Southeast, with 6,720 square feet of frozen surface. A number of themed events are planned to make the skating even more enjoyable. On Jan. 23, the 9 p.m. Ice Jam highlights the latest musical hits; Jan. 31 brings in the Broad Street Concert Band. Each ticket covers 90 minutes of skating and includes a pair of rental skates.

Trains, Trains, Trains
Put on your conductor’s hat: It’s time for the Southern Museum’s fifth annual Train, Trains, Trains event. The entire museum will be dedicated to showcasing miles of model trains with eight different layouts that guests can try their hands at running. Crafts for kids and stories about how various historical items were used on the railroads will be part of the fun. The museum’s General locomotive, the Glover Machine Works and an expanded gift shop also will be open.

The Bonaventure Quartet
The Marcus Jewish Community Center invites jazz lovers of all faiths to enjoy the Bonaventure Quartet Jan. 25. Claiming that they are much better at music than math, the “quartet” is actually a nine-piece group consisting of strings, drums, a clarinet, a trumpet, an accordion, guitars and a vocalist. The local musicians recently released their second album, “Lost and Found at the Clermont Lounge,” a mix of French-inspired jazz with Southern charm.
