The Chattahoochee Nature Center will host the 17th annual Flying Colors Butterfly Festival this weekend. The two-day festival will feature hundreds of butterflies as a part of the fundraising event for the center.
The event promises two days of family-fun, which is why it made our list of five things to do this weekend in Atlanta.
If you’re wondering why you should attend the festival with you kids, we have five reasons.
Live butterfly releases: There are four opportunities to witness the release of hundreds of live butterflies during this festival. On Saturday releases are scheduled to take place at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and on Sunday they'll take place at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Organizers will host a discussion prior to each release to educate attendees on native butterflies and the release process.
Butterfly costume parades: The specific times for the butterfly costume parade haven't been released, but they usually occur around the time of the live butterfly releases. Children are encouraged to participate alongside their parents.
Crafts and face painting: Even if you aren't dressed as a butterfly, you can still be made up to look like one at this festival. There will be arts and crafts, and a face painting section to keep children entertained between activities.
Food trucks: Whether you're looking to enjoy a meal or a snack, you'll have a few options at the festival, including Middle Eastern restaurant Incrediball Falafel. Brusters Ice Cream, King of Pops and Georgia Popcorn Company will also be onsite.
Live entertainment: Enjoy live music from local musicians such as country singer Ashley Crasosn and The Bow Weevils, a band comprised of children.
A printed schedule of events and a map will be available. Visit chattnaturecenter.org for additional information.
The Atlanta-Journal Constitution is an event sponsor, along with Autotrader and Macy’s.
