Smith's Olde Bar: This Midtown bar/music venue is where to see small bands before they get big----or be lucky enough to see a secret show from a well-known artist. My most memorable night here was watching John Mayer do a midnight blues session out of nowhere. Count on Smith's for classic bar food but - extra bonus! - they serve Fox Brothers BBQ. Eddie's Attic: This is another place to see the artists before they break out. Count on Eddie's for great bluegrass, country, folk, Americana or singer-songwriters. I love it because you can get there early and eat during the show or stay late and eat on the patio. They simulcast the shows so you if you hit the early show you can see the late one on their multiple TV screens or vice versa. The Family Dog: It's no secret that chef/owner Ron Eyester is a tremendous Grateful Dead fan (sister restaurant Rosebud is named for Jerry Garcia's guitar). Expect jam bands, cover bands and jazz at this Morningside spot. Ron is constantly tweaking the menu, but you can't go wrong with his legendary pimento cheese with spicy saltine crackers. www.thefamilydogatlanta.com
The Sound Table: Find everything from jazz to great DJs at this popular Edgewood restaurant/bar. The small plates and cocktails are super sophisticated and change regularly. Also look for special pop up nights with acclaimed Atlanta chefs like Hector Santiago (Pura Vida, Abattoir) and David Sweeney (Dynamic Dish, Restaurant Eugene). www.thesoundtable.com
JCT Bar: Chef/owner Ford Fry is serious about music; many of the cocktails at his popular restaurants are inspired by songs. The bar upstairs at JCT has a fantastic skyline view and the menu is a bit different from the restaurant. Look for live music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. They do everything from jazz to singer-songwriter tunes. Try the deviled eggs or go with a creative meat and cheese plate. http://www.jctkitchen.com
