Sushi picks

I recently wrote about my top picks for sushi, which depends wholly on mood. If I want a place that feels like Japan — and by that I mean the lively restaurant culture I recall from living in that country years ago — then I end up at Sushi House Hayakawa. But if I want glamour sushi, then I hit up Tomo Japanese Restaurant. Where do you go?

Event tickets

If you like to plan ahead and save a few dollars, tickets are now on sale for JCT Kitchen’s annual Attack of the Killer Tomato Festival. There will be 1,400 tickets sold to this July 21 event where chefs, mixologists and local farmers come together to create a variety of tomato-inspired tastes and sips. Event proceeds will benefit Georgia Organics.

Canoe’s burger

I recently had the Duck ‘n Beef burger at Canoe. It’s a heady grind of 70 percent beef and 30 percent duck. It comes topped with a fried egg, wilted spinach, and pickled cabbage. I wasn’t sure if the duck would add too much gaminess, or how it would blend with the beef. But chef Carvel Grant Gould hits the perfect blend of richness from the duck fat.
