Another addition to the booming Roswell dining scene, Lazaro’s Cuban Cuisine recently opened on Woodstock Road, near the busy corner of Canton Street. The family-owned place features homey Cuban food and a quaint atmosphere that mirrors many of the nearby shops and restaurants.

The look: Lazaro's is located in a cozy bungalow, with a patio garden near the entrance, and limited parking in the back. Inside, the ambience is a mix of lively colors, Cuban artwork and antiques. Dining nooks are spread among the original rooms, accented by redecorated fireplace mantels displaying vintage knickknacks.

The scene: One sunny afternoon, most diners opted for an outdoor table under the branches of a mature magnolia tree. Friendly servers moved to the rhythms of Latin music, swinging through the front door to carry orders from the semi-open kitchen.

The menu: Appetizers, entrees and sides hit all the highlights of Cuban cooking. Chicken, beef or spinach and corn empanadas ($6) come with a housemade sauce that's bottled for retail sale. Entrees, including a classic Cuban sandwich ($9.50), roast pork ($12), picadillo ($12.50), and ropa vieja shredded beef ($15), come with plantains, rice and black beans.

The drinks: Beverages include several types of Cuban coffee and soft drinks, such as Jupina, Materva and Ironbeer. There's a small beer and wine list and sangria by the glass ($5) or pitcher ($18).

The extras: At lunch, there's a lower-priced menu, with specials such as a Cuban-style media noche sandwich with plantain chips ($8.50). Items on the kids menu ($4.95) come with an entree, such as chicken fillet or palomilla steak, and include fries or rice and a drink. Tres leches cake ($6) and flan ($5) are among the dessert offerings.
