Comic book heroes who have died

The Fantastic Four's Human Torch is the latest hero to be killed on comic book pages.

Marvel has extinguished comic book hero the Human Torch's flame and his life, too, as the pop culture purveyor of super heroes and villains embarks on an ambitious story line that ends the Fantastic Four. The Human Torch is not the first hero who has died on the pages of a comic book.

In 1993, Superman is beaten to death by Doomsday in "Superman." He is revived in the September 1993 edition of "The Adventures of Superman," by Krypton superhero the Eradictor.

In the January 2009 edition of "Final Crisis," the Cape Crusader is mortally wounded by powerful supervillain Darkseid. Batman is revived for "Batman and Robin" and in the February 2010 edition it is revealed the slain Batman was a clone.

In 2005, Captain America is killed by Norse god Loki at the courthouse steps, while leading a group of young heroes. Thor transforms Captain America into a star, in the shape of his own shield.

The Punisher, who first made an appearance in the pages of "The Amazing Spider-Man" in 1974, is a vigilante who wages a one-man war on the mob and all criminals after the death of his family. He was slain in an October 2009 issue by Daken - the mutant son of Wolverine - and revived in the next issue.
