It's been pointed out once or twice Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith looks a lot like a certain funny-man. OK, it's been said more than twice. (Flickr / furnaribrphotocreations)

The statement has been made so often that — as Consequence of Sound points out — the mere mention of the observation makes Smith roll his eyes.

Now Smith and Will Ferrell are set to do something a little more productive than eye-rolling and put their uncanny resemblance to work for charity. But before we get to that, here's a quick recap.

In February, Ferrell participated in an Ask Me Anything event on Reddit in which he mentioned he looked a lot like Chad Smith. Well, sort of. (Via Paramount Movies)

"It has been acknowledged many times that myself and Chad Smith ... share a resemblance to each other. A lot of people think that it's me playing for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. But that would be an insult to Chad Smith. The truth of the matter is there is no Will Ferrell. Only Chad Smith." (Via Reddit)

Which was then answered by a video from Smith: "It's Chad. Stop impersonating me. Drum battle. Me and you. I've seen your skills, you don't got 'em." (Via Instagram / funnyordie)

Finally, Smith participated in his own Ask Me Anything and Will Ferrell responded to the challenge. "I saw your video and I graciously accept your invitation to a drum battle. If we can raise $300,000 for Cancer For College I will face off with you in the greatest drum vs. cowbell showdown the world has ever seen." (Via Reddit)

Spin reports the look-alikes have been successful in their challenge, raising more than $300,000 for the charity.

According to Rolling Stone, both will be using the event to raise money for the charity Cancer for College and Little Kids Rock. What's more, "the winner of the battle will receive a giant golden cowbell."

The outlet reports they've also got a side bet. If Smith wins, Ferrell has to wash his car and give him pedicures for a month. If he loses, he'll have to be a stand-in in Ferrell's next film. Either way, it's for charity — may the best drumsticks win.
