Flintstones turn 50; Fred still a role model

Yabba Dabba Doo! The Flintstones, the first, best and perhaps only prehistoric animated comedy, turns 50 today.

Today's Google logo is a big clue.

The show debuted on ABC in 1960, and was basically an animated version of "The Honeymooners," starring comic great Jackie Gleason. It starred the lovable oaf Fred Flintstone, his wife Wilma, and their neighbors Barney and Betty Rubble.

Considering the glut of clueless, brusque patriarchs on TV today (Homer Simpson, Peter Griffin), the father character hasn't evolved very much.

Here's a few famous Flintstone quotes:

** "Why can't they invent something for us to marry instead of women?" -- Fred

** "Ahhh, seatbealts are for kids." -- Fred

** "Wilma, where's my razor? Wilma, where's breakfast?" -- Fred

** "If Fred doesn't come home soon, dinner will be ruined." -- Wilma

** "Make it good Fred, I gotta tell Betty the same story." -- Barney
