The 94-year-old Cincinnati surgeon who wrote the book on saving choking victims through his namesake Heimlich maneuver has now penned a new book: his memoir.
Dr. Henry Heimlich hopes his recently published autobiography ensures that the procedure that made his name a household word will be used correctly.
The maneuver involves applying upward pressure on the diaphragm through thrusts to the abdomen to create an air flow that forces food or other objects out of the windpipe. It has drawn praise and gratitude from those who have used or been saved by it.
But not all health organizations agree with Heimlich on how the maneuver should be used. And some of his other ideas such as using malaria injections to treat AIDS have drawn sharp criticism.

Simon Cowell is a proud new father. A spokeswoman for Cowell says he and socialite Lauren Silverman welcomed their baby son early Friday evening, Valentine's Day, in New York.
The spokeswoman, AnnMarie Thomson, says the infant weighed 6 pounds, 7 ounces, and is named Eric, after Cowell’s father.
Cowell, of “American Idol” and “The X Factor” fame, posted a series of tweets about the happy event. He says the new mom is in “great shape” and describes his new son as “healthy and handsome.”
Last year, Cowell dodged questions about his relationship with the married Silverman. But he later called her “special” and said he feels good about fatherhood, something he hadn’t previously considered.
People magazine reported that Silverman’s divorce from Andrew Silverman became final in New York in December.

Isabel Allende would like to apologize to all the fans and writers of mystery novels.
The million-selling author, whose latest book is a thriller that updates the story of Jack the Ripper, angered many when during a recent interview with NPR she said that her novel was a "joke." During a telephone interview late last week, Allende said her comments themselves were a joke, a joke that didn't work. She said she had great respect for mystery fiction and noted that she was married to a mystery writer, William C. Gordon.
The owner of one Houston bookstore was so offended by her remarks on NPR that it sent back copies of her new book, “Ripper.” Allende has emailed a letter of apology to the owner.
