Carey Carter has a beautiful idea. On Dec. 14, the high-end Phipps Plaza salon he co-owns will serve people in need for free.

"It will be truly rewarding for us," he said.

People who are out of work, have been affected by recent flooding or are otherwise struggling to pay bills can apply for a "Beauty Boost" at Carter Barnes salon. The event features free haircuts, color and styling, along with job counseling and other services. Apply through Friday at www.carterbarnes.com.

Any shifty types out there?

Psst...want to case some really fabulous homes this weekend? Put those untoward thoughts aside! We're summoning folks to fill docent shifts during the annual Marietta Pilgrimage tour of homes. If you have a few hours and some holiday spirit to share, chairs Kathryn Mayfield and Laurie Edwards would love to put you to work in one of the historic homes on tour this Saturday and Sunday. (We trust they won't need to count the silver after you leave). Find out how to help at www.mariettapilgrimage.com.

Buzz in our ear

Punk rocker Jay Reatard plays The Earl at 9 p.m. Thursday, but you can catch him playing at 4:30 p.m. at Criminal Records that day as well...We hear the High Museum of Art's 2010 wine auction, chaired by Michelle Edwards Crosland and Christine Ragland with Elizabeth Harris as wine auction manager. is undergoing some tweaks. Gone are the gala and "Big Finish" wine tasting in favor of a benefactors' preview party, a series of wine dinners around town and a new Vintner's Cup golf outing... Buzz predicts exactly zero people heading to The Earl or Criminal Records on Thursday will also be attending the wine auction in March. Tell us if we're wrong and we'll send you a T-shirt, but only if you promise to wear it to both events.

Overscene

Charles Barkley stopped by South City Kitchen in Midtown the other day for a pre-Thanksgiving feast of chicken and dumplings with a spicy carrot cupcake for dessert...Miss Teen USA, Stormi Henley, visited the Girl Talk chapter meeting at Sutton Middle School and attended an event at Huff Furniture recently...Amber Rose, the model and occasional hip-hop video gal known for dating Kanye West and palling around with BFF Rihanna, partied at Club Primal last week.

The next Seacrest?

Jason Pullman went to Dunwoody High School and got his start filling in at top 40 station, but he's not Ryan Seacrest. Not that he'd mind a comparison.

"I want to emulate Ryan's success," said Pullman, who's back in Atlanta as a morning co-host at country station 94.9/The Bull. Since he joined the Bull about eight months ago with Kristen Gates, he has built up an audience far greater than that of his predecessor Cledus T. Judd.

“I love being back in my hometown," he said.  "I couldn’t be happier."

Say what?

"You don't show up at the White House as a misunderstanding."

- White House spokesman Robert Gibbs, discussing the state dinner appearance by a uninvited couple who have been peddling themselves as reality stars. We'll skip mentioning the parvenu strivers by name and note that Atlanta's Dr. Sanjay Gupta and wife Rebecca were indeed on list. Gupta spent a good bit of the evening catching up with Katie Couric, whom he called "one of my favorites" in a Twitter update.
