Unidentified sources told TMZ that Jolie opted for divorce because of differences in the pair's parenting styles.

"She was extremely upset with his methods," the site reported, adding that infidelity rumors didn't factor into the decision.

Jolie's lawyer confirmed the news to The Associated Press Tuesday morning.

Jolie asked that she get full physical custody of the couple's children, according to TMZ. Jolie and Pitt have six children together -- three adopted and three biological -- between the ages of 8 and 15 years old.

Robert Offer, an attorney for Jolie, told The Associated Press his client filed for dissolution of the marriage "for the health of the family."

Jolie listed Sept. 15, 2016, as the couple's separation date, TMZ reported.

"I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids," Pitt said in a statement to PEOPLE. "I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time."

Jolie's father, actor Jon Voight, told the New York Daily News that news of the divorce filing came as a shock.

"I'm really sad about this," he said. "I'm sending my love to Angie and the kids. ... I know the kids are the priority and Angie will be most concerned about them."

Jolie and Pitt married in 2014 in a private ceremony in France. Their children served as ring bearers.

It was Jolie's third marriage and Pitt's second.

The couple first started generating tabloid rumors in 2004, when they filmed "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" together. At the time, Pitt was married to actress Jennifer Anniston.

Anniston and Pitt divorced in 2005.
