Cornel West, Friendship 9 at King Center for book signings

Author and scholar Cornel West will discuss and sign copies of his book, “The Radical King,” during at series of author-related events on Sunday at the King Center.

The book, which is edited by West, contains writings, sermons and speeches by King. West maintains that King was perhaps more radical in his thinking than many understand.

The event begins at 2:45 p.m. Sunday at the King Center’s Freedom Hall auditorium.

Additionally, surviving members of the “Friendship 9,” a group of students, who attended Friendship Junior College in Rock Hill, S.C., and were arrested during nonviolent protests by sitting at an all-white lunch counter at McCrory’s downtown store, will headline the book-signing event for the center’s Martin Luther King Jr. birthday observance.

Kimberly Johnson, author of “No Fear for Freedom: The Story of the Friendship 9” will discuss and sign copies of the book.

Other authors include the Rev. Bernice A. King, CEO of the King Center; Angela Farris Watkins and Christine King Farris, the niece and sister , respectively, of Martin Luther King Jr.

All of the books will be for sale at The King Center’s Book Store and Resource Center, located adjacent to the auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.
