What to Do in Atlanta: May
Things to love about May... Mad Men and Game of Thrones on Sunday nights, pools, concerts, and vacations. It's making my head spin how many activities we can do. Though we don't have a schedule just yet, the Hawks might be bringing us the Eastern Conference Finals to compliment everything below. Choose any ten for the best month ever.
May 1 - 2
Comedian Lewis Black is in town on May 1. Bill Cosby, despite his recent trouble, is taking his new comedy show on the road. The "Far From Finished" tour hits Atlanta on May 2.
May 8-11 (MOTHER'S DAY WEEKEND)
Shaky Knees brings Atlanta's premiere Rock and Americana festival to Central Park in the Old Fourth Ward (May 8-10). One of the city's biggest music festivals, this year's headliners include The Strokes, Wilco, The Avett Brothers and more. The Sunday lineup is loaded with talent, if you're only looking for a one-day pass.
Just a week or so later, Cobb County country music fans pop the cork on Atlanta's newest summer festival. Shaky Boots – the country music cousin of Shaky Knees is set to stomp it's way through Kennesaw on May 16 and 17. Dierks Bentley, Brad Paisley and the rest of the team will be there.
Elsewhere Mothers Day weekend...
Hozier, will take you to church May 8 at Chastain. Or, if Atlanta's own Zac Brown Band is more your speed, you can get chicken fried at one of his two shows (May 8 and 9 at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater). The Sweet Auburn Springfest is also taking place May 8-10.
And don't forget to call your mom.
May 12
Ed Kowalczyk – the former lead singer of 90's alternative act Live, will be at Variety Playhouse on May 12 to perform an unplugged arrangement of Throwing Copper (for its 20th anniversary).
May 15
Atlanta Funkfest is bringing all your favorites back for two nights only. R Kelly, Erykah Badu, 8ball and MJG will all perform, and guests will also enjoy the reunion of 2 Live Crew.
May 16
Shaky Boots (as above). Or, for those in need of some suds, the East Atlanta Village Beer Festival will be celebrating the beers of the region.
May 18
At Beltline Jamboree, Monday Night Brewing is offering citizens the chance to sample brews and benefit the Beltline project.
May 22-25 (MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND)
Snag some tickets with friends to attend CounterPoint Festival, and this could be you on Memorial Day weekend.
Or, head over to Piedmont Park for the Atlanta Jazz Festival. It's free to enter, and BYOB is allowed. May 22-24.
May 28 - 31
Join your favorite chefs from all over the South as the pack their knives for Midtown. The Atlanta Food & Wine Festival will be cooking up the flavors of Atlanta May 28-31.
The Georgia Craft Beer Festival will be on the west side, sampling many of Georgia's best small-batch brews on from May 30 (1-6 pm).
End your month at the Candler Park Music Festival on May 30 and 31, and see Drive By Truckers, Shovels & Rope, J. Roddy Walston & The Business and more. Entry is free.
