Six Flags Over Georgia is building a huge, immersive, interactive dark ride coming in 2017, and it’s designed to be the next big thing in thrill rides.
Construction is underway for Justice League: Battle for Metropolis, a 4-D ride experience boasting fire, mist and fog effects, plus lifelike animatronic characters in an indoor ride that combines the thrills of a moving ride and cutting-edge video gaming.
Six Flags made the announcement Thursday after revealing clues via social media during recent weeks.
Riders, wearing 3-D glasses and holding laser guns, don’t simply loop around on a track but are bound for Metropolis to help Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman battle the bad guys: Lex Luthor and the Joker and his henchmen.
The ride, in partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products and DC Entertainment, requires a 22,000-square-foot "Hall of Justice" to house the full-sensory thrill ride. This promises to be big, literally — really big, filling a half-acre swath that's nearly half the size of a football field. The "Hall of Justice" will be more than 30 feet tall.
It is replacing the Dodge City Bumper Cars, which had entertained riders since 1973. Meanwhile, the new ride is all about being modern, new and 2017. It will make its debut during Six Flags Over Georgia's 50th anniversary season.
Riders will travel in six-passenger vehicles on a track through rooms in the “Hall of Justice,” but the motion of the vehicle allows them to enter into a 3-D and even 4-D world.
In the Joker Room, there is an animatronic Joker that has a cannon that spits out fire. Riders will actually feel the heat as they pass through the room. While passing through other rooms, riders will go through fog and wind elements and experience the sensation of going head over heels through a virtual loop. Riders will feel the breeze as well, as if they are riding a high-intensity roller coaster.
“When we were evaluating options on how to celebrate our 50th anniversary, we wanted the most innovative, best attraction we could present to our guests,” said Six Flags Atlanta Properties Park President Dale Kaetzel. “Six Flags Over Georgia has created so many family memories that we wanted this to be the capstone of our 50th anniversary season.”
Justice League: Battle for Metropolis is currently at other Six Flags parks, including Six Flags Over Texas, Six Flags St. Louis and Six Flags Great America (north of Chicago), and in Mexico City.
Construction for the ride here started in June. Battle for Metropolis is scheduled to open in the spring of 2017.
Six Flags Over Georgia kicked off its 2016 season with a virtual reality roller coaster ride. But in that case, the Dare Devil Dive roller coaster was not new; instead, virtual reality elements transform the coaster into a VR experience. Using Samsung Gear VR powered by Oculus, riders become “co-pilots” on their own virtual fighter jets. As riders clear the roof, they realize they are on top of a skyscraper and about to launch off the edge of the building, diving straight down on the first drop of the ride. The aircraft races through the city until reaching the edge of the skyline, where riders see the mother ship hovering above.
