Theatre in the Square in Marietta is reopening next week after going dark three years ago.

With a new owner in place since July, the theater, a cornerstone of downtown Marietta, has been undergoing renovations to prepare for its grand reopening Wednesday, Nov. 4 with the show, “Letters from the Front.”

“We are ramping up to make Theatre in the Square a significant part of the culture in Marietta again,” said Courtney Smith, public relations manager, Theatre in the Square.

Smith said the theater plans to present regular performances, which include showcasing a steady number of comedy shows. The theatre is also planning to present “A Christmas Carol” during the holiday season.

The husband and wife team of playwright Bob Rector and producer Marsha Roberts developed “Letters From The Front” while living in Marietta. This award winning production toured 48 states across America and 15 different countries, but never in Marietta, until now. “It’s like coming full circle,” Rector said in a press release, “and we couldn’t be happier that we’re beginning our Legacy Tour here at Theatre in The Square.”

“Letters From The Front” interweaves actual letters written from both the war and home fronts (from the Revolutionary War to the war in Iraq) into what NBC’s Today show calls “A Wonderful Show!” and the CBS Evening News deems, “A patriotic tribute to the men and women who so bravely serve.” The show has been received well — with cheers, tears and standing ovations wherever it has been performed.

Katharine Hartgrove is played by Kathleen Hogan, and America’s top radio comic Johnny Chastain is played by Tim Ross. It’s not all serious, though, despite the subject matter. Chastain brings irreverent and madcap antics to make Katharine and the audience laugh – at him and ourselves.

Several of the original Tuskegee Airmen will be at the opening night performance. They will also be present at the first Sunday matinee, 2 p.m. Nov. 8.
