2008 Emmy nominees announced

AMC's 'Mad Men,' the sleek drama set in the advertising world circa 1960, helped make history when the nominations for the 2008 Emmy Awards were announced Thursday.

'Mad Men' and FX's 'Damages' (starring Glenn Close and Rose Byrne) are the first basic-cable series to earn a best-series nomination. Both shows are up for Oustanding Drama Series.

'Two and a Half Men' earned a nomination for Best Comedy, and Charlie Sheen, right, was nominated for Best Comedy Actor.

'Monk' star Tony Shalhoub earned an Emmy nod for Best Comedy Actor.

'30 Rock,' the 2007 winner for Best Comedy, raked in 17 Emmy nods.

HBO's 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' was nominated for Best Comedy.

'Breaking Bad' star Bryan Cranston was nominated for Best Actor in a drama series.

Holly Hunter is among the Emmy nominees for Best Actress in a drama series for her role in TNT's 'Saving Grace.'

'Lost' earned an Emmy nomination for Best Drama.

Among other Emmy nominations related to the series -- including Best Actor in a Drama for James Spader, center -- a Best Drama nod went out to 'Boston Legal.'

Kyra Sedgwick earned a Best Actress in a drama nomination for her role in TNT's 'The Closer.'

'House' star Hugh Laurie earned an Emmy nomination for Best Actor in a drama series.

'Dexter' star Michael C. Hall was nominated for an Emmy for Best Actor in a drama series.

'Entourage' earned an Emmy nomination for Best Comedy.

The Atlanta-based Cartoon Network earned an Emmy nomination for Best Animated Series with 'Robot Chicken.'

The medieval drama 'The Tudors' earned an Emmy nomination for Best Costuming.

The crime drama 'The Wire,' which finished its run on HBO this past season, received a nomination for Best Writing.

The HBO miniseries 'John Adams' led all shows with 23 Emmy nominations, including Best Lead Actor for star Paul Giamatti.
