Bringing new flourishes to an old home -- Plummer family, Acworth

Allison and Duane Plummer stand with their children, Barrin, 15, and Kylie, 17, behind their Acworth home. Duane, a builder, brought the 1970s ranch home into the 21st century to make it fit into the Satterfield subdivision with new custom homes.

The renovations required not only making the Paulding County home look modern, but changing the orientation of the home. Duane created a cul-de-sac, and the side of the home became the front, featuring columns, siding and stone accents that give it a Craftsman appearance.

The fireplace in the keeping room had been solid brick from floor to ceiling. Duane wrapped part of the fireplace with tongue-and-groove wood paneling in an arch design to give it more detail. The keeping room and kitchen are the family's favorite rooms.

The dining room has details such as judges paneling and a coffered ceiling. A hutch is a perfect fit in the archway. Duane's dad had built the part of the piece with glass, and when he died, Duane decided to create a hutch.

Duane, a Georgia Bulldogs fan, used Maleya Red, a Ralph Lauren paint color, in the entryway, kitchen and keeping room.

Most unusual architectural feature: The wrought iron gates in the living room, which are surrounded by stone columns. The owner of another home had planned to take the gates to the dump when Duane decided to use them in his home.

The renovations included adding in custom touches such as built-in bookcases and using floor to ceiling stone around the fireplace. Duane's wife, Allison, and his mother, Mary, worked on the home's interiors.

The family also enjoys the glass-enclosed sunroom.

The pool was dated when the home was purchased. The old concrete was removed and replaced with stamped concrete around the pool. The deck was existing.

Outside, Duane redid the pool, pond and landscaping and added a sprinkler system and new sod to the yard.

Favorite outdoor feature: The koi pond, which uses huge stones from the property.
