Private Quarters: Tudor Revival in East Lake

The couple took an unoccupied property and renovated it in four phases over two decades.

The 1900s Gothic-styled library bookcase in the living room is one of attorney Keenan Nix's favorite pieces of furniture in the house. He says the statement piece anchors the room and is a perfect balance to the large scale of the room and deeply coffered ceiling.

During renovations of the 110-year-old home, Danielle and Keenan Nix opened up the kitchen and worked with interior designer and space planner Rebecca Fincher of J. Tribble to create a more modern workspace for the family. The walls and trim in the kitchen are two Farrow & Ball colors: Joa's White and Pointing. The kitchen cabinets from J. Tribble are Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter with glaze.

While renovating every inch of the 4,500-square-foot house in East Lake, homeowner Danielle Nix sought to make the 110-year-old home comfortable and workable for her modern family of five. In the basement, she and husband Keenan carved out a cozy multipurpose seating area, perfect for reading or watching television.

A renovated Jack-and-Jill bathroom in the East Lake home features a black-and-white color scheme and a mix of modern and period touches.

A built-in daybed and bookshelves create a cozy nook upstairs in one of the home's five bedrooms. The East Lake homeowners worked with interior designer Donna Campbell of Donna Campbell Home.

A traditional interior style is showcased in their daughter's bedroom upstairs. The classic brass bed is flanked with wall sconces and soft creams and pastels are used in the antiqued furniture, built-in bookshelves and bed linens.

Bedding and accessories in a soft pastel palette create a lovely welcome for guests in the carriage house. The couple worked with interior designer Donna Campbell of Donna Campbell Home.

A guest bedroom on the terrace garden level is decorated in botanical wall draperies, bed linens and wallcoverings from French company Zuber & Cie. It's a sanctuary for rest, meditation and relaxation.

Because the entire house and yard needed major work, Keenan and Danielle Nix tackled the renovations of their 1906 Tudor Revival home in several stages. The master bedroom was restored in the most recent - and they feel, final - phase, which they completed in spring 2015.

Because Keenan and Danielle Nix were bringing up their children at the same time they were renovating their home, it was important to keep family function at the forefront of all designs. Lockers serve as bedroom storage.

In the den, restored archways and oak molding preserve the 110-year-old home's original charm and allow the classic traditional interior style to shine. The homeowners worked with interior designer Donna Campbell of Donna Campbell Home.

Toward the back of Danielle and Keenan Nix's East Lake 1.4-acre property sits a renovated carriage house, which now offers guests a quiet "bed and breakfast" retreat complete with a bedroom suite, kitchen and living area.

Stately Italian Cypress, an evergreen conifer, were planted as 2 feet tall and have grown to 60 feet tall in the backyard of the East Lake home.

The J. Tribble custom walnut butcher block island is the centerpiece of Danielle Nix's newly renovated kitchen. Sconces, along with the clover ceiling light fixture in the kitchen, are from Circa Lighting. The addition of a new kitchen pantry gives the century-old kitchen plenty of storage.

The carriage house view of Keenan Nix's meticulously manicured gardens beckons guests to settle in for a nice, long stay.

When they Keenan and Danielle Nix purchased their home and 1.4-acre lot in East Lake, the grounds were so overgrown that they didn't know a 20-foot handcrafted stone fireplace in the yard even existed. Today, it's a prominent feature.

When Keenan and Danielle Nix built a pool for their family in the backyard, Keenan planted 175 3-foot tall Leyland cypress trees along the border of the property. The trees are now 50 feet tall and create a privacy security screen along Atlanta's Memorial Drive.

Their cat, Batman, often patrols the gardens of Keenan and Danielle Nix's East Lake property.

When Keenan Nix began clearing the overgrown jungle on his East Lake property, he discovered four stonewalled terraces, which inspired his English garden. Fountains, planters and sculptures, primarily from JAM'n Designs and Intown Ace Garden Center surround a waterfall that cascades down the terraces.

As part of the 20-year-long renovation of their East Lake Tudor Revival home, Danielle and Keenan Nix hired Joe Bahamonde to refinish and stain their oak hardwood floors with the diamond pattern, seen here in the breakfast area. The antique light fixture above the table was found at Lamp Arts.

A window seat on the stair landing, surrounded by antique French iron sconces from Boxwoods Gardens & Gifts, offers the family a comfortable spot to look outside or reflect upon the restored beauty of the home's interior.
