Private Quarters: Roswell home blends heirlooms with modern design

About 5,000 square feet, four bedrooms, four full and two half-baths

Judy Mozen's and Randy Urquhart's 5,000-square-foot, four-bedroom Roswell home was built in 1986. As president and vice president of Handcrafted Homes, the two professional remodelers say their home is always in some stage of renovation. "It's the constant story of the cobbler's children have no shoes, " says Mozen. "We can never spend the time to take our guys away from their work to get our space completely renovated - so we start areas and don't always get to finish."

A waterfall and pond grace one side of a circular stone patio outside the front door of the Roswell home. "Most people don't bring you up to the front door with a pond. The pond is in the back, " says homeowner and builder Judy Mozen. "We recreated a circular type of patio in the front with a pond."

Judy Mozen's and Randy Urquhart's modern Roswell home is built around an octagonal core. From the front door, visitors look through the unique stairwell and into the sunken living room with carpet from Moda Floors and Interiors.

Modern artwork and an antique rosewood couch inlaid with walnut and mahogany are bathed in light in the entryway. The art reflects the unique home's decidedly modern design, while the heirloom furniture is a tribute to homeowner Judy Mozen's family ties. When she inherited her mother's and grandmother's furniture, Judy found a creative way to mix her modern style with the beautiful, sentimental pieces of her past.

At the core of the Roswell home is a staircase that wraps around in an octagonal shape. On one floor, a bridge connects the entry to the living room. "It is fun to stand there and view the rooms and spaces, " says homeowner Judy Mozen.

The unique octagonal stairwell in this Roswell home is carpeted in the Branching Out design in a Wedgewood color, from Moda Floors and Interiors. The vines in the gray carpet appear to stretch all the way down the stairs. The walls are painted in satin Sherwin-Williams Pearl Gray.

In a large open space, like Judy Mozen's and Randy Urquhart's family room/kitchen/breakfast area, it can be difficult to envision how different paint colors will work together. As a professional remodeler, Mozen offers this tip -- which she employed in her own home. Using the Sherwin-Williams app, she took a picture of the area, and plugged in colors she was considering before finalizing her paint choices. In the end, she chose Koi Pond, Sealskin and Peppery.

In the family room, rustic accents like the heavy stone fireplace and stained wood wall bring elements of the outdoors to this modern home in Roswell. The glass-topped coffee table balances the chunky stone and wood to maintain an open, airy feeling in the room.

Homeowner Randy Urquhart loves the new couch from Modani in his Roswell family room. It has a back that folds up and down, providing versatility and a comfortable seating option.

Natural light floods Randy Urquhart's and Judy Mozen's home in nearly every room. The breakfast area just off the kitchen features a wall of fixed windows that reach to the vaulted ceiling. Because of the sunlight, Mozen's beloved plants thrive throughout the house.

Eye-catching blooms match the colorful rug from Havertys in this breakfast room with a treetop view. Modern chairs from Modani and glass skylights and windows are juxtaposed with the rustic tongue-and-groove stained wooden ceiling and painted white beams.

Painted in Sherwin-Williams Sand Beach and accented on the ceiling with Sherwin-Williams Stolen Kiss, the dining room in this modern Roswell home includes a built-in china cabinet by Handcrafted Homes, a modern chandelier by Masterpiece Lighting and a traditional marquetry chest.

The house may be all modern in design, but homeowners Judy Mozen and Randy Urquhart have furnished it with a mix of modern and traditional pieces. In the dining room, the oval table and chairs are modern, but the silver candlesticks, crystal decanters and side table are traditional.

Homeowners Judy Mozen and Randy Urquhart are halfway through remodeling their Roswell kitchen. Recent renovations include the addition of new appliances and fixtures, like a Grohe faucet and stainless Kenmore refrigerator, ovens and dishwasher. Still to be tackled are new countertops and the floors.

A niche above the ovens and refrigerator allows the elevation of that wall to be artistic, as well as functional. In the niche, homeowners Judy Mozen and Randy Urquhart feature collected pottery and artwork. Above the island, Mozen designed an LED light fixture, which was custom-made by Lighting Loft.

Judy Mozen built her modern home in 1986. While the kitchen renovations are still under way and new countertops are coming soon, this nifty counter extension raises to give the avid cook extra prep space and then folds flat against the cupboards when not needed.

The fireplace is the focal point in Judy Mozen's and Randy Urquhart's modern Roswell living room, and one of Judy's favorite architectural elements. An arch of black granite surrounding the fireplace creates a sense of depth drawing the eyes in, but also acts as a mirror reflecting the room around it.

Rosewood antique chairs with mahogany and walnut accents flank a mahogany desk that once belonged to homeowner Judy Mozenâ€™s grandfather. A closer look reveals the desk was actually crafted out of a piano, which inspired its unique, bold style.
