Private Quarters: Renovated Sandy Springs ’70s-style home with outdoor living

Dacor appliances, a Sub-Zero refrigerator and a Bosch dishwasher were installed when the homeowners renovated the kitchen in the early 2000s. They worked with CSI Kitchen & Bath Studio.

One of the newest pieces of furniture in the home is a Hickory White dining room set purchased from Encore Fine Furnishings in Roswell. The dining room is open to the living room in the contemporary-style home.

Vaulted ceilings are a major part of the master suite renovation completed in 2012. The spindle bed is by Century Furniture.

In the renovated master bathroom, designed by Sarah Fisher, the vanity and cabinets were custom built by Randy and Jackie Rains of R and R Woodmasters in Jasper.

Two large windows allow the homeowners to view their garden from the master bedroom, which has a framed portrait by an unknown artist and purchased at a gallery on the Marietta Square.

The master bathroom was renovated in 2012, as the couple worked with designer Sarah Fisher.

The renovated master suite, designed by Sarah Fisher, has a series of arches that define and soften the spaces.

A baby grand Steinway piano, with garden views, is a gathering spot during parties. “We have friends who are musicians, so this rocks when they get here,” homeowner Elaine Lehman said.

The fireplace in the living room previously was red brick, but received a modern update with the brick removed and a new white mantle, decorated with a painting by Atlanta artist Barbara A. Wood. The hearth is made of black granite.

The glass prism chandelier was in the dining room when the Lehmans purchased the home 20 years ago. They put the fixture away, but it was brought out again when they renovated their master bathroom in 2012.

The jukebox, a Seeburg Mode HF100R, was manufactured only in 1954 and 1955. Elaine Lehman paid $150 for it years ago, when she lived on Long Island in New York.

The deck was renovated in 2011, adding Ipe, a Brazilian hardwood. The deck extends from the contemporary Sandy Springs home to the garden and pool.

An antique Chinese display chest is homeowner Elaine Lehman's favorite piece of furniture because of its workmanship and its uniqueness.

Homeowner Elaine Lehman says her main goal is having a garden that looks natural and maintains the casual feel of her home. King Landscaping helped her transform the space to the right that is viewed from her sunroom, by adding elements such as large stones and a tree with spiraling branches (Corylus avellana 'Contorta') that she loves. A paver walkway leads to the pool.

The driveway ends at a wall of ivy, adding more interest to the area that includes the garden shed and containers with hostas.

Now, the Sandy Springs home's outdoor living space includes a pool and dining area, renovated deck, garden and stacked stone wall.

A stacked stone wall winds around the pool, which was added to the Sandy Springs property in 2003. Hydrangea, Loropetalum and white Cyclamen trees are around the pool area.

Ralph & Elaine Lehman purchased their contemporary home in Sandy Springs in the late 1970s. Over the years, they have updated several rooms, including the kitchen, den, a guest bathroom and a master suite.

The contemporary-style home in Sandy Springs has 3,850 square feet, four bedrooms and four baths. It was built in the 1970s, but the exterior was redone with hardiplank siding and stacked stone in 2013.

The powder room is dressed up with wallpaper, a furniture-like vanity and framed French scenes.

A bar area has lighted shelves for displaying glassware and crystal, and a Scotsman wine cooler underneath the granite countertop.

Carvings continue around a Chinese display chest, purchased from Scott Antique Market.
