Private Quarters: Renovated Kirkwood home keeps historic charm

The home was built at the end of the Victorian era, but most of its architectural elements fit with the Craftsman era, according to the homeowners.

The house, which was built in 1907, is on the 13th annual Kirkwood Spring Fling Tour of Homes May 16-17.

Jonathan and Callie Rich moved into the home in 2012 with their children (left to right), Adele, 2; Halle, 3 months; Josiah, 7; and Evangeline, 4. There's a custom bed in the master bedroom, which has stained glass that fits with the home's post-Victorian-era time period. The walls are painted Sherwin-Williams' Agreeable Gray.

There’s a number of standout features in the new master bathroom, including the custom-made vanity with Venato white marble countertops and white marble subway tile in the shower. Stained glass and a chandelier bring the home’s post-Victorian appearance into the bathroom.

The five-bedroom home includes a guest room with a sliding leaded glass door. Music is a common decor element in the home, with guitars and albums on display. The walls are painted Sherwin-Williams' Toque White.

Functionality was key in the kids' rooms, with storage, an antique desk and bunk beds. The artwork, on walls painted Sherwin-Williams' Gibraltar, gives a nod to Atlanta landmarks - The Varsity and the Fox Theatre.

Above the bedroom doorways, the clear glass transoms were replaced with custom-made glass during the renovation of the Kirkwood home. The home is on the 13th Annual Kirkwood Spring Fling Tour of Homes (kirkwoodfling.com/tour-of-homes/) on May 16-17.

The girls' room features beds from Rooms to Go with sunny bedding and walls painted Sherwin Williams' Watery.

Subway tile backsplash, Shaker-style cabinets painted Benjamin Moore's White Dove and Alabama White marble countertops, from Bottega Stone, give a new shine to the renovated Kirkwood home. Homeowners Jonathan and Callie Rich also selected pendant jug lights from shadesoflight.com and 10-foot antique doors from a Macon mansion.

The wood grain of the dining room table, handcrafted in France, makes it a gorgeous piece of furniture, homeowner Callie Rich said. The renovated room has coffered ceilings and light fixtures purchased on eBay, and brass sconces from a mansion on the New Jersey shore.

A school cafeteria-style breakfast table from World Market has attached stools that swivel underneath the table. More seating is available on a built-in bench; the cushion is from Cushion Source. The light is a restored schoolhouse-style fixture from Rejuvenation.

A sofa, console and coffee table from Room & Board create a mid-century aesthetic in the family room. The walls are painted Sherwin-Williams’ Special Gray.

The crisp home office, accessed via leaded glass doors, has walls painted Benjamin Moore’s White Dove. Painted paneling and built-in bookshelves stretch to the ceiling.

A favorite spot in the Kirkwood home is the sleeping porch facing the Atlanta skyline, with a custom daybed swing.

The home's mid-century elements include a love seat on the sleeping porch, which has an ice box from Kudzu Antiques and walls painted Benjamin Moore's Constellation.

A granite fireplace was added on the screen porch. The fireplace was constructed by continuing the granite of an old, non-functional well on the property.

When they purchased the home in December 2012, it was in disrepair, but the beauty of the bones was evident, homeowner Callie Rich said. The newel posts on the stairs were “buttery smooth,” she said. They worked with architect Roderick Cloud and contractor Rob Lord of Quality Homeworks during the 18-month renovation.

The stairwell, the fireplace mantels and the dining room pocket doors, were restored to their original stained form during the 18-month renovation of the Kirkwood home.

Squirrels and pigeons were living in the mudroom when the couple purchased the home in 2012. Custom cabinets and built-ins are painted Benjamin Moore’s White Dove, and the storage baskets are from Marshalls.

The homeowners brought back older elements such as push button electric plates and fixtures in renovating the 1907 home in Kirkwood. The plates are from Vintage Hardware & Lighting; the fixtures are from House of Antique Hardware.

During an 18-month renovation, the Kirkwood homeowners worked with contractor Rob Lord of Quality Homeworks and other professionals to restore fireplace mantels and bring back historical and mid-century elements in the 1907 home. The 4,500-square-foot home now has five bedrooms and three-and-a-half baths.

The renovated kitchen features a Delilah Deck-Mount Bridge Faucet, sold by Signature Hardware, on new Alabama white marble countertops from Bottega Stone. The 4,500-square-foot home is on the 13th Annual Kirkwood Spring Fling Tour of Homes (kirkwoodfling.com/tour-of-homes/) on May 16-17.
